Ok, so I graduated in 2001 from Johnson & Wales University in Food Service Management. I’ve been in foodservice in one reguard or another, whether it be waitressing, bartending and now management at a hospital cafeteria.
I have only been a Supervisor now for 4 months and absolutely **** IT! I think about not going in, like every day… But my family and fiance are so proud of me for getting the job and getting the great benefits. Now, I can’t even switch my job until 6 months is up, and even then I’m not guaranteed that there will be a good position that pays similarly to what I currently make.
I’ve thought about going back to school, either Medical Assisting or Nursing working in Dermatology or for a Plastic Surgeon. But I’m so confused… Ultimately I would love to start my own small business. Does anyone have any advice or information on what the next best small biz to open, would be???

I feel like I lack focus and can’t figure out what career to concentrate on… HELP!

If you are interested or wants to know more information. feel free to email me.
No matter what type of job you have even in business you own, you have to stick with it, there are always things you like or don’t like about a job. This real life, learn to live with it and grow from the interaction, supervising people is a must if you are thinking about owning your own business. My sister worked for a dermatologist and the stress is high and you need to work with others well and if you are interested increasing your salary you need to supervisor.
You are probably best off sellin’ dat azz.

Can you cook? If so, you can consider becoming a caterer. While you are at your current position, create flyers for your catering business. This way you can gauge how much money you may make.
OR ARE ways to earn good revenue from home and earn ongoing royalties forever.
Take what you have learned from your food industry education and take some cake decorating lessons. yOu could make cakes, cookies and pretty desserts and stuff. Make sure you reseach what business licenses you need first. You could do catering too. If you do this out of your home you can claim your home as a place of business on your taxes for a deduction.
Or if you wnat a change - check out I am using them to complete my degree in Vet Technology. They can set up up with a payment plan of $50 a month, no intrest and its all online and they send you your books int he mail. I think they are great.
Well Kid; join the rest of us. Their are few who really enjoy their chosen jobs when working for others. Your resume in food management must result from wanting to be a leader in food services. That isn’t to shabby a way. How about starting your own catering business. You are a boss, design foods for all sorts of people, and businesses. Your hours are your own and the money is all that the customer can pay. Keep your job until the new job starts paying.
Spartawo…
Do you dislike your current job b/c of the company you work for, the supervisory duties or the fact that its food service?
If its the current company that’s driving you nuts, lthan have you considered starting your own catering company? Its something you and a friend or two can start up part time till it grows big enough to support you.
If its the supervisory duties, I would think twice about the idea of your own business. If you dislike the supervisory duties, starting your own business is only going to put more such duties and day to day responsibilities on you.
If its food service in general, then the medical field is booming and there’s a ton of programs available for someone wanting to break in. Medical offices are always looking for service oriented people to make patients feel taken care of.
So, you **** your job? Well, you are not alone. Millions of people toil at a job they **** everyday, and I would **** to be one of those.
You don’t say where your interests lie, but the key is to find something you are passionate about, turn that into your income, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life. Afterall, how can something you LOVE to do be called WORK? So, find something you love to do, and look for ways to turn that into an income.
Set your goal, start out slow, and do something to move yourself toward accomplishing your goal everyday, and soon, you will be a much happier person.
Good Luck,
Michael
What are your real interests? You have a food service degree - what is it that you wanted to do in that field? Once you get into management - managing people becomes your main job. It is a whole different ball game and one that not everyone is cut out for. Health benefits are a real perk, but you could have them with any big company. As for going into business for yourself - the only real reason to start a business is because you believe that the service or product you offer is superior to any other out there. (Domino’s pizza believed they could get the pizza to you while it was still hot - now there is warming trays in the trucks instead of speeding tickets). So go into business making your better mouse trap or whatever you do better than any one else. But remember - you need to hire or be proficient in business management - and you don’t like management.
The first thing you have to do is some soul searching. Why do you **** your job? Is it the food service, is the management, is it the hours? Then think about jobs you’ve had that you loved. Have you had any? I **** to tell you this, but if you **** being a supervisor, you may not like owning your own business. Owning a business is not something to step into lightly and in a lot of cases it takes having a “regular” job on the side until things take off, especially if you can’t secure financial backing. And if you **** working long hours, owning a business is definately not for you.
Now as to actually owning a business and what kind, there is no “best” small business. A good small business is something you enjoy and are good at. Are you organized and have great creative ideas, be an event planner. Love to cook and talk to people, open a cafe or coffee shop. See where I’m going with this?
One thing you can do that will really help you is take a small business management course. A good one will walk you through writing and presenting a business plan, which is vital to gaining financial backing. They can also give you a general overview about selecting a location and being compatable with the business around you, how to market your product/service, and making smart advertising decisions. But one class can’t teach you all the details of those things, so get yourself some professional memberships and trade publications.
There are other options to being your own boss without as much financial risk, (be wary of anything that says it is “risk-free”, it’s probably a scam). Home based cosmetic sales like Avon, Mary Kay or Arbonne come to mind. But be very cautious with those types of options, it is nearly impossible to make money right away and many of their salepeople still have “regular” jobs.
The bottom line is you have to figure out what you truly want to do before you do anything. I’m sorry if this is hard to hear but my guess is, since you don’t know what kind of business you want to own, you’re talking about owning a business because you **** your job and you haven’t really thought the whole idea through.
Good luck.
