Now as to actually owning a business and what kind, there is no “best” small business. A good small business is something you enjoy and are good at. Are you organized and have great creative ideas, be an event planner. Love to cook and talk to people, open a cafe or coffee shop. See where I’m going with this?

One thing you can do that will really help you is take a small business management course. A good one will walk you through writing and presenting a business plan, which is vital to gaining financial backing. They can also give you a general overview about selecting a location and being compatable with the business around you, how to market your product/service, and making smart advertising decisions. But one class can’t teach you all the details of those things, so get yourself some professional memberships and trade publications.

There are other options to being your own boss without as much financial risk, (be wary of anything that says it is “risk-free”, it’s probably a scam). Home based cosmetic sales like Avon, Mary Kay or Arbonne come to mind. But be very cautious with those types of options, it is nearly impossible to make money right away and many of their salepeople still have “regular” jobs.

The bottom line is you have to figure out what you truly want to do before you do anything. I’m sorry if this is hard to hear but my guess is, since you don’t know what kind of business you want to own, you’re talking about owning a business because you **** your job and you haven’t really thought the whole idea through.

You don’t say where your interests lie, but the key is to find something you are passionate about, turn that into your income, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life. Afterall, how can something you LOVE to do be called WORK? So, find something you love to do, and look for ways to turn that into an income.

Set your goal, start out slow, and do something to move yourself toward accomplishing your goal everyday, and soon, you will be a much happier person.

If its the current company that’s driving you nuts, lthan have you considered starting your own catering company? Its something you and a friend or two can start up part time till it grows big enough to support you.

If its the supervisory duties, I would think twice about the idea of your own business. If you dislike the supervisory duties, starting your own business is only going to put more such duties and day to day responsibilities on you.

If its food service in general, then the medical field is booming and there’s a ton of programs available for someone wanting to break in. Medical offices are always looking for service oriented people to make patients feel taken care of.
