I am interested in starting a business in Michigan, and have already started the paperwork for an LLC. My concern is that if I return on a daily basis (especially at the setup stage of the business), Customs will eventually pull me over and deny me entry. Does overseeing the establishment of a small business, and ongoing management of said business require any particular visas or other paperwork, or am I fine as long as I do not receive any renumeration for this (I will be filing the LLC as a single member, and therefore the profits will pass through to me eventually, but does this really matter at this point?). I will be hiring US staff to man the operation, and setup will also be done by Americans. Any perspective on this would be greatly appreciated…

You need to talk to the people at US Citizenship and Immigration Services and find out what the rules are for living in Canada and owning a business in Michigan. There is probably a visa program that might make it practical and prevent you from being denied entry, but it’s doubtful that anyone here will have the knowledge you need.
